Cylindrical lenses
Cylindrical lenses have both a cylindrical surface and a straight surface. Depending on the direction of incidence of the light that enters these lenses, that light will either be refracted or will travel straight ahead. This enables unidirectional condensing or diverging of light. The name might be unfamiliar, but the cylindrical lens itself is often used in the magnifying lenses you may use when reading a book. Less visible applications include use in laser printers and copy machines.
